Below are some short summaries of the five main services that we provide. To learn more about each service, click on one of the bubbles below or click the link within each paragraph of text.
Service 1 : Digital IdentitiesThe Identity Management Team (IDMT) creates, updates, and stores the digital identities for every person, application, and computing device within the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS). We then make the information in these identities available to other people and computer systems that require it.
Service 2 : Workflow ManagementWhen something about an identity changes (otherwise known as an event) it can trigger what is known as a workflow—a series of tasks performed by people and/or computers. We can simplify or automate many common workplace tasks via the use of automated workflows.
Service 3 : AuthenticationAuthentication is the process of validating (otherwise known as proving) an identity. This process begins when a user submits identifying pieces of information known as credentials to the network. These credentials typically take the form of a User ID and password. A Policy Enforcement Point (PEP) reviews these credentials and decides whether or not the user should have access to the systems on that network.
Service 4: Access ControlAccess control (sometimes referred to as authorization) determines the level of access a person has to an application once they've logged in to it. We accomplish this by placing each user identity into a group and then granting a certain level of access to each member of that group.
These services provide the infrastructure on which all of our other services are built. They are the technologies and tools that make all of the other services possible. They include:
